Michael Piermatteo, 57, has been identified as the passenger of a GMC truck who had to be airlifted to an area hospital after the driver went off-road on Monday, Feb. 13, and came to rest in an embankment on the side of the roadway, according to officials.
Shortly after 7:15 p.m. on Monday night, police say that troopers were called to the area of I-340 at Mt. Zion Road in Frederick to investigate a reported single-vehicle crash.
According to investigators, it was determined that Virginia resident Scarlet Estep, 60, was driving a 2004 GMC truck south on Route 15 near Mt. Zion Road when she lost control, entered the grass median and course corrected before crossing all lanes of traffic, and striking an embankment.
Estep was transported to Frederick Memorial Hospital for treatment of undisclosed injuries. Piermatteo was airlifted to R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, where he was later pronounced dead.
The incident is now under investigation by the Maryland State Police Crash Team.
